The company has its origins in BK Tåg AB, which in 1990 – in connection with the deregulation of the railway market in Sweden – became the first privately owned train company to take over traffic from SJ (Swedish State Railways) and to start operating it independently.

In the nineties, the company became MidCargo and its main traffic was the first private freight train shuttle to the Gothenburg Harbour. The project was initiated in 1998 together with Vänerexpressen and the Karlstad and Gothenburg harbours. The traffic has now been running continuously for over ten years and is being developed further by all parties.

As of January 2012, CFL cargo owns 51% of the shares of MidCargo AB, which from this point forward, will be called CFL cargo Sverige AB.
